Paint Options
Hi guys. I usually only post in the 61-66 section but had a paint question I wanted to run by the experts.
My 66 needs to be repainted and I want to do it myself. It is not and will never be a show truck, I just want it to look nicer than it does now (very bad flat black/primer rattle can job done by PO over multicolored body parts).
I have no interest in exposing myself to isocyanates, and I know that all of the "good" paint with hardener has those. For a truck I just want to drive around to Home Depot and haul miscellaneous things, I would rather not expose my neighbors, family or self.
I also am not interested in paying someone to do it "right" as the whole point of the truck was to do things myself and learn and have fun.
That being said, I think my only options are as follows:
(1) Rattle can (try to do a better job than PO, kinda like teds74ford that he did in green rustoleum cans).
(2) An older-tech alkyd enamel like rustoleum, JD Blitz Black mixed and sprayed through a gun.
(3) An acrylic enamel like TCP Restoration Shop w/o the hardener.
Have I missed any options? Does anyone make more sense than another? Am I just crazy for wanting to do it myself with the above stipulations?

Hey Matt,
I know of guys that have taking their truck to a one day shop and pay less then a grand for a single stage paint.
If your serious I'd run with the product from TCP. I use them for my stuff and they have some good stuff, also Eastwood. I found TCP little cheaper in cost and quick on shipping.
They also have some nice flat paints. Not seeing your truck body. Id start with 180 and sand up to 220 and primer, sand with 400 or 600 and paint.
Have to ask if you have a spray gun. 1.4 for base 1.8 for primer. Could be a cool project very rewarding. lots of videos out there. https://www.youtube.com/user/MrZoeystevenson and https://www.youtube.com/user/ButlerCollision
Ive been working on my 56 for a year re doing color and mods. link below logo.
Cheers
Ed

Hi Ed and thanks for the advice. I checked out your website, very cool how you are documenting everything.
Funny you mention the spray gun as I had thought about buying on the airless HVLP turbine spray systems but ran into a neighbor the other day and he was asking me about the truck and what color I wanted to paint it. Then he said he had an entire set-up that he used for doing parts on his M3s and that I was welcome to use it. Not sure exactly what tip sizes he has but likely a few options and I could always by something to use with his set-up if he didn't have what I needed.
Thanks for the nod to TCP and I will check out Eastwood has as well. I am a ways from painting but just trying to plan ahead.
