Thanks, you saved me $50 if I keep this column.

I got the shaft assembly out with the tilt mechanism tonight. Column is still in the truck. I will see what I can do with this...

Matt, I believe I saw the firewall plate on the column but not connected.

Why don't you go ahead and pull the column too? That way you can clean it up and paint it if you want before reinstalling. The dash cuff and connection at rag joint is what holds it in place anyways.

John, you are right of course. That is the plan I just want to see where I can get with this tilt mechanism. I still have to get the actual shaft out and found a right up in how to do that and will hopefully be able to give it a go tonight.

Before I remove it, is this normally jow the brake light switch should be? I don't recall seeing this and it is obviously rigged up this way and not original. Not that anything is original on this truck...

Disassembly complete.

PROSTOCK, I guess these little square things are the bushings you made? Mine are indeed quite worn.

I assume these are not available me anywhere, but maybe ND will prove me wrong.

I could replace my and bolt and apply some loctite and that would help but I think these being be replaced would be the best.

Yes sir, that appears to be a brake light switch. I saw the clamp and wondered what it was for. With that pedal assembly I am not sure how to reattach it. I posted a photo of my setup about a week ago but can't find it this morning.

John, I saw it in the thread for electrical brake switch last week. I'm not good at posting a link, but I think this is the one.

Thanks John and yankbs. That picture is helpful. I will have to get and under there and see if I can rearrange that.

Anyone have any ideas on those worn bushings? I actually found the ball bearings as they are ubiquitous and can be found lots of places. I guess I could ask a machine shop to make me a pair. Should be simple.

Well, the issue is resolved. Cleaned up the joint, put the not on with some Lottie and tightened the heck out of it. Didn't put it all back together put put the shaft back in and the slop is gone.

The bearings in the column are shot so will replace while I have it in pieces. To the rest of the column out and will clean it up and paint it before putting it back.

John, it looks like I have all of the parts except the actual column shiift lever and linkage to conver this back to column shift so I am really going to consider that given the crappy floor shifter that's in the truck now and th e room I would get back. Thanks for the idea when you were out here.

Does anyone know if the column gear shift levers are fairly interchangeable between different Fords? I am having a devil of a time finding the specific column gear shifter lever for this 79 column, but have seen a variety of them for different vehicles on eBay and other places.

I can't answer that, I would think so. But I can tell you that that if you hook up to a tree trunk and think you can pull it out of the ground without a seatbelt on and it doesn't give....you will break other parts in that steering column. Just make sure the camera is rolling.

That sounds like quite the adventure.

Just a belated note to anyone that finds this thread later, tightening up that u-joint/knuckle in the steering column worked great. I reinstalled everything a few weeks ago and took her for a spin. Night and day difference. Sure it is still a 50 year old truck but now I can drive with one hand on the wheel and the other out the window without fearing for my life.
