I had a problem that I've never seen or heard of, so I thought I'd post it in hopes if anyone encounter's this it will save them some money and aggravation. Here's what happened, I go out to start my truck (89 150 351w C-6) I turn the key truck start's (like alway's, No surprise ) I turn the key back to the run position and the starter keep's cranking. Motor's running and so is the starter. Turn the key to off position, kill's the motor but the starter is still cranking. By the time I popped the hood, grabbed a wrench and disconnected the battery the starter was smok'in hot. My first thought was it was the solenoid (don't know why, probably cuz I've worked on to many chevy's). I'll make along story short, it was the computer. Thank's to this web site I found a wiring diagram and figured it out. Hope this help's someone.
It was the computer?? Then I think you should have been able to stop the starter from cranking by pulling that little slip on wire off of the solenoid, instead of wasting time using a wrench.
If the solenoid is faulty and sticking, giving the solenoid a few karate chops will usually release it.
That did make what I'm sure is a really long story short, but doesn't make sense. Your keyswitch provides power to the computer. Sounds like a sticky solenoid, like a common bow tie problem.
Had I of knowen it was the computer, yes I could of pulled the wire on the solnoid. At the time it wasen't even a consideration. I know now! As for it being the solnoid, I replaced twice. My buddy's at O'Rielly's where starting to look at me alittle funny. So no it wasn't the solnoid. When I was pulling my hair out trying to figure this out. What really confused me was I could start it jumping across the solnoid and the starter wouldn't keep cranking. Everytime I used the key it would. Fact of the matter, since I replaced the computer it has not done it once! And that's been several month's ago now. What happened in the computer and why, that I can't tell you.
