Starting problems

I've been battling a starting problem for a while and finally narrowed it down to the soleniod. I replaced the starting solenoid and now everytime I start the truck the starter continues to turn over and does not disengage! I thouhght the soleniod was bad and went to replace it. The new one did the same thing! So I put the old one back on and it turned over and disengaged perfectly. Am I imagining this or what! Does anyone know why a new soleniod would not allow the starter to disengage?

Thanks!!!

Very simple! "Defective Part" Make sure to buy quality parts, not autozone's shxx! Especially electrical parts seem to have a lot of trouble being defective when they are new. Buy original parts from ford.

Defective soleniod was my original thought, so I returned it for a new one. The new one did the same exact thing! Two bad ones in a row?! I'm not sure... But thanks for the input.

You said the old one engages and disengages perfect. Why replace it? What were the symptoms of the old one?

Well, the truck would pick and chose what days it wanted to start. After fooling around with a number of different things, I decided to just replace the solenoid, becauase the ign switch was good. Now with the new solenoid the truck will start every time, except the starter will not disengage. I had someone else tell me they have had to rig up starting buttons to bypass this problem. Anyway, I'm not an expert on electrical systems, but know enough to think that this is odd. Unless of course BOTH NEW solenoids were bad. Thanks for the reply!!!!!

Hi,

I am curious if you fixed this problem or not. Aside from that, I want to hazzard a guess. It sure sounds like the solenoid circuit is wired wrong and is energized for as long as the ignition circuit is energized. This would give the very symptoms that you are having.

I could only guess as to how this could happen, so here are some easy guesses. 1. You fiddled with the ignition switch while troubleshooting, leaving it wired wrong. 2. You wired the new solenoid incorrectly. 3. You have a short in the solenoid circuit that you will have to isolate. 4. A bad ignition switch is leaving the circuit on, and you need to replace the worn out ignition switch,(not the ignition lock).

Extended periods of cranking will melt the contacts in the solenoid together also

Starting problems

I was curious about the initial troubleshooting steps. I had a starting problem with my '77 for a while. I thought that I had a bad solenoid, started some days and not on others. I had a defective neutral safety switch on the transmission. Temporarily bypassed it until I could get another. Sorry, but I have no ideas about the constant starter engagement.

Have you checked to see if the starter is disengaging when you shut the motor off?? This may be the easiest way to see if its a solenoid or starter problem.

Heres the deal i turn the key, the motor starts and the starter stays running until: (1)i turn the key back off(along with the engine) or (2)i pull the power wire from the silinoid
I got another new starter gonna give it a shot....let me know what ya think

If this is the traditional ford solenoid, you may have crossed the two smaller wires on the solenoid.
my 2.5 cents

Guess its a possiblility...theres a red wire which im not sure where it goes, and there is a yellow wire which goes to the voltage regulator. They have those slip-on boots on the ends of them. I guess i jsut assumed that if they fit they worked. Mabe i should get new ends on them and swap them. Worth a shot definetly. Ive tried everything else....thanks for info ill let ya know what happens.

Does your starter have a soleniod on the starter itself? If so, then it needs a jumper from the hot lead to the S post (I'm pretty sure that's where it goes). Any starter rebuild shop can tell you where it goes exactly and sell you the pre fab jumper strap or make your own. If it doesn't have a solenoid then maybe the starter is just sticking, sometimes you can spray wd 40 on it to free it up.
