A little info first. Been on the search for a 96 f-150 5.0 5spd reg cab shortbed 4X4 for some time. My Dad bought one new and I always hoped to buy it from him but he totaled it a year later.
One popped up for sale or trade here and it happened to be a neighbor of mine. He was having issues with the back brakes being stuck and needed something to drive. I offered him my 99 ranger 4X4 and he agreed.
Still waiting on his title so we will be trading probably Friday.
The truck has another issue where it won't start unless the motor is cold. It just cranks when warmed up. Once I get the truck home I can narrow it down to fuel or fire but I can hear the fuel pump running when cycling the ignition.
I have no problem going through the truck with a meter to find the issue but if anyone has seen this before and knows a common issue I'd appreciate the input.
Also neither the speedo or odometer work. All the other gauges function.
The truck did sit for a few years before this guy bought it from an uncle. He did say it has a water damage title.
Im not scared of tracing down a few electrical problems. Just hope I'm not getting into a huge mess.
This truck will not be a daily driver for me. More of a hobby truck I can tinker on in the garage and use when I need a truck.
You did not say but from what you say it is a 1996 F150.
The Black ICM (called TFI ignition module above) very seldom goes bad.
What cause this most of the time is a bad ECT or IAT sensor.
If they are bad they very seldom set a code because they are in normal range when the engine is cold.
I got the truck in my name today and tore into it. It was a bent pin on the ECT sensor causing the truck not to start when hot. I got a long list of things to fix on this truck but at least I now know it will start every time.
I had trouble with warm starts a couple years back, and I'm trying to remember the exact cause. I was having the common pressurized fuel tank problem at the same time. I want to say that the troubled warm starts were caused by a bad coolant temp sending unit--the idea being that the unit sends an incorrect temperature to the computer, and causes the computer to increase or decrease fuel richness, which makes starts difficult.
I don't know how you can test the temp sending unit. I'm not a fan of throwing parts at a problem, but at $6, it might be worth crossing it off the list.
