Have 1984 F150 351w, with a 1979 duraspark system. Have had couple times after running some time, engine hot, weather over 75 degree go to restart motor just cranks and will not start. but have started after letting go of key, sometimes it back fires. changed out ignition switch still same problem. I am thinking maybe coil or module, any suggestions.
TFI module most likely. I had the opposite happen where it would start in start then die when I let off and let it return to normal run position. Found out that there is a separate run circuit and start circuit so sometimes one will fail with the other still good in the module.
Sounds like your start circuit died or at least dies when hot, but the run circuit is OK so if the motor is turning enough when you let it off of start, it catches spark then fires up.
A bad coil when hot should cause the truck to stall while it is running, not only when restarting.
It could also be your fuel pump diaphramn, it has happened to me too, I let it cool down then it would start right up. if it gets too hot it won't pull the fuel
I replaced the Duraspark module and coil, did not fix problem but did make a differance in the performance of truck. Checked the distributor after no start and found a crack on the stator pickup, part of the plastic was broken that is molded to keep it altogether. No problems after replacement. Hopfully that was the problem.
