Lightbulb dually conversion

I have seen s few threads about this and a lot of people saying just use a F250. I am looking at converting my 98 F150 2X4 into a dully, NOT for hauling, but for added traction for drag racing. So how well could a f250 or 350 bolt to a f150? would I need to make a custom drive line for the rear? how well do you think the stock tranny could move that rear?

I will ask nicely for no negative comments, I know what my truck will look like with duels and some hips, I know what I am looking at doing will be different, but for the potential gains when I get the new motor built and installed it will help.

Welcome to FTE.

I think you are on the wrong track for drag racing traction. Are you looking to actually drag race at a sanctioned strip, or street race?

The tires you would normally find on a dual rear wheel truck are rock hard and not designed for drag racing. If you are thinking about two smaller tires, you are adding weight and complexity, neither of which is your friend.

What kind of engine mods are you going to end up with? Your transmission will be very concerned about that.

I see that this is a '98 with a 5.4 motor. And that you are in CA. The mods you make to the engine must comply with the emissions laws or you will not be able to register your truck. You list "intake" and Hedman headers--are those CARB legal?

In my theory, I can use twice as much tire as only one. I know it will add more weight but that weight is also on the rear axle which will help gain more traction.
I currently have a 5.4 but I am looking at getting a 5.0 and doing a lot of building, I am aiming for 700+ horsepower to the wheels. Yes I am in California but I will most likely have a track only truck. I am also a huge fan of something different and this would really be different. I have a lot of ideas for this project and I will be a lot into it.
I know its possible and I know it will be a lot of work but I have a really good fabrication crew backing me and a crew for the engine.
As for the transmission I am not looking at a stock one, I am looking at high performance race transmission. This truck will become a full custom build that will take a lot of money and time, it's my hobby and dream.
thank you for replying.

With that kind of power, you are going to be doing a 4 bar or other racing type suspension. You will have difficulty harnessing your power just hanging an axle on leaf springs. Some other way of managing spring wrap will have to be employed.

You are also looking at something other than a stock trans, so between the rear axle and a different trans, you will need a new driveshaft.

You may or may not run NHRA, but I'd build it with the rules in mind. You may only get into the 11s with 700 hp, but there are still plenty of rules for what you are doing.

thank you for the link, and the information. I have not looked into rules, I was looking at running at the local tracks, and most likely some (S.R.)
I never thought of spring wrap, I just figured four bug tires vs two would help the traction drastically. I know I will be running a four link, and anything I can do to help run safely and perform great.

You'd be surprised how much traction two big drag slicks have compared to 4 rock hard truck tires.....

Drag racing requires quick acceleration. Rotating weight is the enemy of quick acceleration, and dually wheels weigh a ton. Wide drag wheels weigh a lot less.
