What would y'all do?
My question is: before I get the headers I want to finish out the exhaust back to stock location. So I am trying to determine which muffler set up would give me the sound I am looking for and no annoying drone in the cab around 2000+ RPM. The sound I want is pretty much the sound that is there now....low deep gurgle like noise (you know wob.wob.wob). But I don't want any craking and poping after I get off the accelerator that I hear with so many trucks. And I want it to be 3" all the way out prorbably with no tip.
I was thinking about gibson but I heard one of thier sound clips for a 4.6(I know its not the 5.0 like I have) and it didn't sound very good. So I was thinkng maybe flowmaster 50 series SUV/truck or an edlebrock set up. What do you guys think. Are there any other out there that would give me this sound?
Flowmasters sound good but DRONE bad on the freeway and power gains are very limited with them. Basically a "hey look I am loud and slow!" I don't see any major power gains with them...most don't either as the chambers limit flow!
Actual power comes from straight through design mufflers. The larger case keeps the sound down and keeps as well as increases the lowend torque of the exhuast. Magnaflow is awesome, Dynomax, Borla, Corsa, B&B are all on the same page. These make power and keep the sound at a normal level (very limited droning and no nasty sound either)...I don't consider a 40 Series Flowmaster normal, liveable, or okay for the daily freeway commute. Is a 10-14db increase in sound okay? Not to me. Why be uncomfortable when driving?
I have a 5x11x22 Magnaflow on my F-150 and the sound is great...very deep and mellow. Nice at WOT. I have Hooker LTs and a 2.5"->3" exhuast with a Carsound cat. The Drone is very, very unobtrusive...nothing like a Flowmaster.
To give you an idea what I think about Flowmaster...I went from a 50 Series Flowmaster to that Magnaflow on the F-150. I went from a 40 Series Delta Flow (came with it!) to a Magnaflow on my Z71. That's got to tell ya somethin...
If you need a sound increase, slap on a high flow cat ($75 typically from mail order places) and some headers to increase flow, sound, and power. Then it is okay to be mildly loud. I'd rather be fast and sneaky than loud and slow.
Suprisingly I may sound like an old man but being in my early 20's, I now have a more refined sound taste for vehicles. I enjoy the smooth, exotic sounds vs the old loudass trash sound. Most of the ones I describes are very mellow putting around and let out a monster WOT sound when the hammer is dropped. That is how a performance vehicle should be.
Your exhaust setup planned is similar to mine except with shorty headers. It is nice under light acceleration and lets out a nice fairly loud tone when the pedal is down.
The 22" case is also wider...it is a VERY tight fit to get that 5x11x22 on my truck. It isn't too loud and I am unsure of what your sound tastes are. The 5x8x18 is going to fit far easier...knowing that now I probably would have gone with that due to size restraints.
The 5x8x18 is going to be slightly louder as there is less sound matting to control flow, it will still be very mellow...the sound difference is going to be hard to tell.
With either of the larger cased ones, freeway sound it very minimal. Somehow all good straight through designs are very quiet almost silent on the freeway...which is how I think a performance exhaust should be.
I hope that helps...

....did you get the center to center or offset or what? I am just want to know which one will fit best. and did you get a tip with yours? I am usually opposed to tips but thats just because most people around here get resonators, and I hate those. but i saw magna flow has some just single sheet 45 degrees slash cuts that look real good.
I hate tips! Espically 3.5"-4" tips with 2" tailpipes! Hahaha. That is how my Z71 came when I picked it up used...needless to say as soon as I got home out came the WD-40 and the hacksaw. Those big tips look nasty and megaphone the sound. That truck had you typical "***** kicker/redneck" parts on it like...bug deflector, nerf bars, cheap drop in bedliner, and that 40 series Flowmaster with big tips!
The only ones I'd use would be the nonresonator tips of the same diameter of the tailpipe if you wanted the tips seen directly out back or off to the sides. They'd look less obtrusive, keep sound down, and add a bit of shine to the tailpipe.
My pipes are dropped right by the bumper... a la Lincoln Town Cars, old muscle cars, etc. Looks very classy and clean.
Lemme know if you need any more help...you can email me if you wish. Besides I would like to know what you think of this setup when you get it installed.
BTW...Bronco's are cool as hell! I really want a '94-'95 Eddie Bauer, 351W, 4R70W, dark green or black, and optioned out. I think the best part of them is that the camper comes off and that back window rolls down.
I think what I might do is go to a muffler shop and get them to bend up some 3" pipe out to where I want it to exit and then just get the muffle later on when I have more money. Cause I spent it all on the y-pipe (I am a broke college kid so that broke the bank).
So pretty much i don't know when its gonna get installed but i will post to let everyone know how it goes.
