I have a slight surge or "hunting rpm" at idle. Any suggestions on where to start? I don't have a scanner. It is very slight and does not seem to affect driveability.
Then you're going to spend a lot of time and aggravation hunting it down. Check all your basics like fluids and filters. Try simple things like unplugging the ICP sensor at idle, but otherwise keep an eye on it to see if you notice any changes with the weather or temperatures or different fuel.
No high idle. It's been doing it for the last 25,000+ miles (truck just turned 140,000 miles) Everytime I fill up I put in Amsoil diesel additive, but it's had this same problem before I started using Amsoil. No oil in the ICP plug. I'll try unplugging it tomorrow. Any other suggestions?

Sensor Monitoring
Tools: Bi-Directional Scan Tool
1. Select the parameters indicated from the Scan Tool parameter list and monitor while cranking engine.
Data List Monitoring Parameter:
V-PWR 10.5 VDC Minimum.
RPM 100 RPM Minimum (0 - CMP Suspect)
ICP 500 PSI or 3.4 MPAM Minimum
ICPv (KOEO) Spec 0.20v - 0.30v
ICP Duty Cycle% Spec: 10%-12% at idle, engine at 140F or >
FUEL PW: 1 MS - 6 MS ( <1 / >6 IDM Suspect)
*V-PWR - If indicating a low voltage condition, check battery voltage, charging system or power and ground circuits to the PCM.
2. ICP - A minimum of 500 PSI (3.4 mPa) is required before the injectors are enabled. No or low oil in the reservoir, system leakage, injector O-Rings, or faulty IPR could cause pressure loss.
Note: If no RPM signal is received, IPR duty cycle will default to 14%
3. FUEL PW - Even though a 1 to 6 mS FUEL PW is shown, it’s possible the IDM did not receive the signal due to a CI or FDCS circuit fault or internal IDM failure.
I had the same issue. Noticed it first at idle at night from my living room window after a remote start. My parking lights go on to signal a start.
I noticed a very faint strobing in the lights. Whent out to the truck and saw the tach bounce just a couple hundred revs in a slow pattern. It didn't affect driveability but really bothered me.
I did a lot of basic things to resolve it.
Finally got down to changing out my fuel pump and that did the trick.
Was getting weak I guess.
(not sure why it only loped at idle, one would think it would starve the rig at cruising speed but it didn't) Dunno
Alright, I double checked the RPM's and there is no needle bounce at all, just a slight variance that you can hear at idle. Truck runs great, no hesitation, good power.
