Hey Everyone...what should be the normal Idle speed for the 4.6L. 05' STX Scab seems to be running low at times (around the 650 range) and it varies from time to time. (all readings are with the With the a/c off and using the "Test mode Tach" in my STX). Has anyone else noticed a problem with the idle and if so any suggested fixes?
are you going by the tach? the tach is not super accurate. run the self test mode in the truck. it will display all of that info in the area where the odometer is . turn truck off hold down the trip reset buttom and turn the key and start it release the button when the word test comes up. press test to cycle through the different things.
When does it vary? With temperature? With weather? Does it idle smooth at the diff speeds, or is it a choppy idle?
The Low Idle occurs usually after the engine warms up and when I am stopped in Drive (Stoplight, etc.). When speed is increased I do not notice anything abnormal about the RPM's...they remain consistant with the throttle response. The Idle when stopped feels like its on the verge of a stall. As I said..it drops down to 600 RPMs. The weird thing is you can actually see it dropping down.

This is what I used....I have an STX so I dont have a factory installed Tach and I have yet to find the time to install an after market one yet
650 seems to be normal idle speed, and should not vary with any load on it! Otherwords the ECM compensates for the load. With that said, there are 2 TSB's for rough idle, and idle surge when coming to a stop. One is an EGR issue, and the other is a reflash of the ECM. Not sure if these apply to the 4.6 but it's worth a try!
