Idle issues

I have a 93 7.3l the idle goes fast then to normal and keeps repeating I also noticed during this the tach showed 0-200, the tach does not move with the idle ramping. I rapped the throttle and the tach went normal near 800. I only drove it a short distance so i don't know of ant tranny issues. Could this be the tach sensor?

cammer32v,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

How short was your drive?
Was the engine still cold?

There is a temp switch that advances the timing and increases the idle speed till the coolant reaches about 115 degrees.

Truck left cold then 14 miles to town it started at the first stop light. Went to the movies came out the idle still erratic and tach at 0. The shifting seems to be okay. I pulled the tach sensor or the one next to the filler neck the cd calls it a diesel sensor it ohms at 2300 to 2500 the cd says 2000-3000 so it seems to be good. Also it seems
the idle lately has been good just the tach is erratic.

Check the engine temp switch for sporatic powering up of the fast idle and timing advance when above 112*F....... it will cause surging.

Check the wires where they exit the big nut on the oil filler housing , known to short out due to bare wire.....
