3.73 to 4.30 conversion question

I've read a lot about choosing between the 3.73 and 4.30. I was going to order an f250 king ranch with the 6.2 next month but as it turns out the custom orders for the 2015s end this month at my dealership, I can order a 2016 by mid march but i can get a better deal from what they have on the lot.

The majority of what they have in my area only have the 3.73 rear end with the electronic locking diff. if I buy this upgrade by nitro with the electric locking differential still work??????
Gear Package

thanks!

I would try the 3,73 for a while, before you spend a bunch of $$.

I'm going to have my gears swapped next month. I'm going with Ford OEM 4.30 gears. I have a 2WD so my costs wll be a bit lower.

I was going to wait and swap them out until the summer at the time I plan on getting a corsa exhaust kit. I just want to make sure I can still use the electronic locking diff. Unless I just have my Ford dealership do it before I roll off the lot with the truck.

Nope. Going to use a trusted performance shop I've used before that specializes in Ford trucks.

What are you going to use the truck for, daily driver or are you going to pull something with it.

I'll be using it daily driver plus a little towing 3-4 times per month at around 8k pounds. Most of the time the cab will be filled with 3-5 people. I just wanted a bit of a bigger gear to lug around the weight of the extra passengers.

I would give the 3.73 a chance before I changed them.

I just look at my wife and tell her she's gonna have the ride in the back. Once the laser beam eyes trim off some of my gut I find the weight is just right in the cab. :P

I ordered my truck with 4.30s, and I'm glad I did. They raised the speed limit in my state to 80 m.p.h, and my truck with 4.30s handles it just fine. Plus, my truck rarely down shifts on the interstate when I'm not tow anything. I believe the 4.30 gears was only a $390.00 option back in 2013. And, having a dealership or an outside source install a new gear set would probably be a lot more money, than if you just ordered the 4.30 from the factory.

If you want 4.30s buy a truck with 4.30s and save yourself money and headache. If you want to change gears , yes the e-locker will still work. There is no carrier break for the sterling so all ratios use the same carrier. The front Dana 60 has a carrier break at 4.10. A 3.73 truck you will need to use a thick 4.30 ring gear to avoid buying a new carrier. Not sure with a factory 4.30 truck if Ford uses that setup or the 4.10&up carrier with a standard thin gear. There is no specification on that kit which front ring gear they are selling you. Unless you are putting larger tires on you will need a tuner or have to plead the dealer to flash the computer for that ratio, your speedo will be reading too fast. No to mention the warranty issues. I take it that you aren't doing the install but you don't need all the stuff in that kit for a new truck. You really only need the gears, carrier shims, pinion shims and worst case a new inner pinion bearing so you don't have to pull the old one. I'm doing this same install to adjust for larger tires, you can find a Yukon gear set for the rear, about $380, G2 front set for $225, and rummage e-bay for the shims maybe $100 for all of them (separate shim kits of course). I know how do install gear sets so no labor but you will have a few hundred per axle. Moral of the story, for the price of the Yukon gear set you can have them in the truck from the factory.

There will be no need to flash the computer for the different ratio to correct the speedometer if the stock size tires are retained. The speedometer runs off of the tone ring in the rear diff, which measures the rotational speed of the tires, not the driveshaft. I also would give the 3.73 gears a try for a while with the kind of loading that the OP is talking about. The 6.2 has plenty of grunt to haul around 5 guys and lots of equipment all the time with the 3.73 gears. I think that the 4.30 gears really shine when you are towing in excess of 10k.

For those wondering what it costs to have 3.73 gears swapped for 4.30 gears (front & rear) I got a price today from a dealer in SE Missouri of $2106.50 (parts & labor). The truck is a 2012, F-250, FX4x4, Lariat trim.
Work will be done next week (16-21 Mar 15).

I'll let you know how the conversion works if interested.

You're going to beat me to it! What gears are you going with? Yukon or Ford? I took my Reflection out last weekend and the truck did not do as well as previous trips on steep grades. It did so bad that I'm now worried 4.30's might not cut it and I might have to get a Diesel. I only got 6.1 MPG going to higher elevation (4,500 feet) but got 8.9 MPG coming back. The MPG's doesn't bother me as much as the power going up steep grades. I look forward to your feedback once you have a chance to pull your Reflection with the 4.30's.
