Ex Upgrade Questions

So here's my beast (it's a little dirty :/)! It's a 2001 v10 gas with 164xxx miles and tan interior. It's got new belts, new alternator, and new torque converter. I'm looking at upgrading it so it can handle Colorado Rockies weather when I move there in the fall. Needs some body work, and a new paint job. But other than that, here's what I wanna do to it:

-full length luggage rack (w/ fog lights)
-update the grill
-bull bar
-37" humvee tires
-3" lift

Need some help finding the right hardware! What racks and bars will work with my ex? Would love to see some examples. Also, I need to know whether or not I'll need to jack it up to put 37's on it. All opinions are welcome!

I don't know for a fact but I am thinking to fit 37s you need 6" of lift. Just so you know stock trucks with good tires handle the weather hear just fine.

I wouldn't want any of the various 37" military tread patterns on my truck in a snow storm. I'd rather have snow tires or something like a Cooper atw or grabber at2

coyotehide : WELCOME to the world of XXXs

YOU WILL need 6"s of lift (a 4" super duty kit) to run 37's or you will need to do a LOT of cutting

With v code (f250 springs) and a leveling leaf I can barely clear 35's up front. Rub at full lock but probably wouldn't with different offset wheels. The rear will probably accommodate 35's stock. Never test fit them.

35's might be a much easier goal if you don't want a huge lift. My setup still uses the stock pitman, drag link, track bar, brake lines, and sway bar links. I don't think I I could go any higher without needing to exchange some of these for aftermarket parts.

Agreed. I'm on V's with a 2" full hangar kit and B-mod's, 35's fit nicely but it's a wee bit close.

When you guys say 35's, is that 35 x12.5 or so or can you run a 285 75 r18 (narrow 35") with just the springs?

I run modded X codes (3 7/8" lift) and 305/70R18E Nitto Dura grapplers that spec out at 35.28" tall x 12.80 wide on '04 SD Lariat 18"x8" rims, just a bit of rub on the springs at full lock. I plan to do the Tylus steering stop mod on my new (to me) front axle housing before I swap it in so the rub will be eliminated. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-only-8-a.html

I'm on 315 75 R16's, stock backspacing from what I can tell (CraigsList sourced the wheels), I only run the leaf springs a little bit at full steering lock. It clears everywhere else but does get close to the rear of the wheel well at certain points.

The 35's I test fit were true 35x12.50x17 Baja claws off my other truck. On unknown aftermarket 17" wheels.

I'm going to hold out for 2004 factory lariat or KR wheels and go 285 75 18's.
About 6 years I had an 01 diesel excursion and used a 2.5 inch hanger style leveling kit that the trucks use and an add a leaf out back. I ran that size and looked and fit wheel.

I really have grown to appreciate nice factory wheels. I love my limited polished 16"ers but want taller than a 285 75 16.

I'm not crazy about wrapping a 315 on the narrow stock wheel. I tow heavier loads too often with it loaded with my family and don't want to risk the chance of a tire failure.

A wider tire on a narrow rim won't lead to failure. Just has the potential to create uneven wear and can increase feelings of squirm. Plenty of people do and have no problems at all though, and if you're getting a 35" mud or aggressive all terrain tire, my experience has been that they don't wear evenly no matter what you do if you drive on the highway a good bit.

^^What he said^^ Works OK, have towed 26' toyhauler with 315s on stock
wheels. It allows the sidewall to flex a bit more than a wider wheel. Less than
ideal, but not unheard of.
