A wider tire on a narrow rim won't lead to failure. Just has the potential to create uneven wear and can increase feelings of squirm. Plenty of people do and have no problems at all though, and if you're getting a 35" mud or aggressive all terrain tire, my experience has been that they don't wear evenly no matter what you do if you drive on the highway a good bit.

My understanding is the concern isn't so much for wear, it's that the shoulder of the tire is pulled towards the wheel more and if under inflated to keep a better flat contact patch then the side wall/ shoulder mushrooms as it rolls.
Either way it brakes down the shoulders and could cause a blowout.
Told this from two different tire shops, but I have no experience on it
Other than our old EX had a slow leaked tire and it would sit for a couple weeks at a time. I would air it up and tow with it for the weekend. This happened about three times in a row. The last time the wife was pulling the toy hauler and blew out that tire passing a semi on the Freeway. She was shaken but kept it in line and took care of business
That was clearly my fault. It was stock tires on stock wheels.
I'll reconsider the 315's but if they provide squermish ride how good is that while towing?

I live here in northern Colorado and have a 5" lift running 35" toyo muds and have been now for five years and no problems with traction or uneven tire wear. And I tow my 35' toy hauler all the time. I actually have some new tires and wheels on the way I'm going to try to fit some 315/70r18 equal to a 36".

The issue were looking at though is running that wide of tire on a 7" wheel.
