I hate those chrome caps and I sand/paint them black as soon as I get the truck home from the dealer.
They look nice but the sun finds a way to glare off them and it bothers me. I also don't like the reflection while I'm driving, they reflect everything I'm driving around and the perceived motion always makes me look. Any time I see motion I'm drawn to look.
I have seen these caps in three options. None, Chrome, and painted the color of the truck.
I would prefer that mine, on my Tuxedo Black truck, were painted the color of my truck. My second preference would be to have nothing. I don't like too much chrome on a black truck so that would be my last option and the one that is on my truck. Chrome package at work....
I went with the full chrome covers because even though I liked the look of the factory black textured mirrors, they could be a real pain to get all the bug guts and road crime clean. The smooth finish on the chrome overlay covers are a breeze to clean even the most stubborn dead bug off of.
Made of your standard chrome finish overlay on plastic, the same as the door handles and surrounds. Should the finish ever fade, peel or not appeal to me I'll prime them and paint them white to match the truck finish.
However, I have used this same product on other trucks and after 7 years they looked just as good as the day I put them on the truck.
My '10 dually had the black mirrors and I loved them due to them being the new larger style. My new truck came with the chrome package that I don't care for. Yep, the one that loves chrome doesn't like the package. My main reason is I would prefer powder coated tow hooks and black mirrors for pretty much as Joel said. The glare gets me sometimes although I like the way they look form the outside. BUT, I love the step rails that come with the chrome package. They have rubber all the way down the rail whereas the standard ones only have the step pads. Those pads are not in the absolute best place, as entering and exiting the truck, it is easy to moss them and step on the chrome. However, when I put the '08 style mirrors on my Excursion(second best upgrade done) they came with the chrome tops. So in a sense they are growing on me. I wish we could order them the way we want them to begin with.
Agreed Monty. It's not so much the way they look, it's the glare and reflection.
I also really like the step bars. The tow hooks and bed hardware? It's nice but I don't see how it's such a big deal. The exhaust tips are nice chromed but they start looking aged almost immediately. On my 2008 truck I actually painted the exhaust tips black. High temp paint, needed re coating every 6 months. My mirror caps need re coating every season too, which I don't mind a bit.
