Hey Guys, I'm sure there's a post here somewhere regarding this but I still haven't figured out how to productively search for such threads so my question is, what's involved in getting a 460 in an '84 250 (currently a 5.0L with 4-speed). What I need specifically is what mounts would I have to use, does a 460 bolt up to the 4-speed... basically, what's needed to adapt the 460 into this bay.
Motor mounts should be different but what transmission does the truck currently have?
I wanna say it's the T170FT. For motor mounts, wasn't a 460 offered as an option that year? Can I just buy mounts for a 460 and they should bolt right up to the mounts welded to the frame?
You could most likely get a combination that would work with your tranny, but that tranny is very weak, it would never hold up to a 460. What are you planning to do with this truck? Like the other poster alluded to, you need a heavy duty tranny for that engine. They came with t19 4 speeds, if you want overdrive a zf 5 speed would work.
You are correct, if you have a f250, you should be able to find the plates and mounts to mount it up from another f250 or 350. But you may have a small problem; The trucks that came with the diesels and the 460's have a big dent made into the front crossmember for oil filter clearance. If you have a small block f250, then your truck probably doesn't have this dent, and you will need to run a remote filter setup. Even with the dent,, the 460's had a special oil filter adapter different from the cars.
You will have to check your radiator support. See if it will accommodate a 460 radiator. It may not and will have to be changed, not sure though.
I don't know how much you want to delve into your engine, but a stroker 351 can get you torque numbers close to a stock 460 relatively easily. A 351W bored and stroked to 408 will give you a large boost in torque without the oil filter or trans issues. Additionally, you can still do a zf5 swap on the transmission. Keep in mind that there are two ZF transmissions, the S42 rated for 425ft-lbs and the rarer S47 rated at 475. And some after market rebuilds rated around 45-460ft-lbs.
