Hi I am noew to having an SUV and I just got a 1997 Explorer Eddie Bauer Edition, I love it. I have notices that when I get upto about 58-60 Mph I get a bit of a wobble or shake. I can feel it in the stering wheel and feel it in the whole thing. Its not really bad but I don't kow if it should be doing that with the ties it has or not. Like I said I am new to this. I went to have my tires balanced and rotated yesterdy. I was told that they were balanced just right and they said there was a cupping or somthing like that on the front tires. I was told it should be better now that the tires were rotated. Well I think it is a little better but still not gone. Any ideas on this, or is it just how an SUV is?
sounds to me it is a front-end issue, have the balljoints checked for vertical play and the silent blocks (triangle to chassis) for exessive play (hydraulic press needed).
Good luck, Tony.
My '98 sport does the same thing but, I dont feel it in the steering wheel it's in the seat and you can see the 5 sp shifter wobbling. Mine is between 64-71 mph.
HELP!!!!!
Hi James,
In The Netherlands I had to pay about $34,- for a lower balljoint and $28,- for each upper balljoint (connecting rod).
That makes 2x34+2x28= $124,-
The silent blocks I don't know, mine were OK and they usually are if you don't frequently rock-climb with your baby.
Just don't let those blocks get greasy, the rubber can't stand it.
BTW, my odo says 130.000 miles, I have the 16" rims with 255x70 tires, that also gives more wear to the front-end compared to standard 15" wheels.
And yes, there is labour to pay, as a home-mechanic it took me a whole afternoon to fix it.
Most of the time was spend to remove the torsionbars and triangle.
I think spares will be cheaper in the US, so maybe this gives you an idea.
Greetz, Tony.
