My 1993 F250 (7.3L) 4x4 starting making a loud "cling" when I was backing up. I looked underneath and didn't see anything unusual. I then drove it down the road and it made the "cling" sound again. I thought I had dropped a drive shaft it was so loud and the truck jerked hard and the front end started to bounce very bad. I turned around and going back home I could hear a rotating grind from within the cab. Steering is no problem. All of this is done driving straight at about 25mph. The truck shifts fine and I put it in 4x4 then back to 2x4 but still no change. All the noise and bumpy ride was at or below 25mph. Any ideas?
Found the problem and I hope this helps someone else out...
It was the passenger-side lockout hub. My hubs are manual and I did drive (by mistake) in 4x4 with the hubs in the "free" mode. I replaced both hubs with a solid metal mile marker hub and the truck drives great!
