Before I crawl underneath my son's 92 Ranger to look for it, any hints on where the backup light switch is located? I am assuming it must be somewhere on/near the transmission.
4.0 engine, 4WD, 5 speed manual trans
Fuse is good, bulbs are OK, wires to bulbs appear intact, turn signals work.
My shop manual has a wiring diagram, but no description of location or repair.
KennOO is better at this, but here is where to start. The switch is located on the transmission case infront of the shift tower on the drivers side near the top. It is a two wire connector and a threaded switch. To test the switch, disconnect the plug and measure voltage from the + side of the switch to vehicle ground. If there is less than 10v repair the circuit. If there is greater than 10v, measure the resistance on the harness side connector between the + and vehicle ground. If the resistance is less than 5 ohm, replace the switch. If the resistance is greater than 5 ohm repair the circuit/wiring.
Yep. Found it. Voltage was fine, resistance tested fine. Put a jumper across the two terminals on the connector and lights came on. (It helped to park MY Ranger with a chrome bumper behind my son's truck so I could see the backup lights reflected in the bumper!) Pulled the switch, plugged it in to the connector. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. Tested the switch. Worked every time. Looked a little closer at the connector.
Blue corrosion everywhere. Cleaned it up, put it back together.
