After many years of owning my 04 F350 6.0, I sold it yesterday to Carmax. Although we had a lot of good memories going to the beach, mountains and dunes, we also had trips that were memorable due to 6.0 issues. Long story short, I wont miss it but I will miss the members here who provided a lot of good information and advice as I worked on the many issues known to plague 6.0's.
I replaced it with a BMW 328I about a year ago as my daily driver and didn't put more than 500 miles on the 6.0 in the last 11 months. I sold our 35' 5th wheel in November and don't have a need for a pickup. That being said I don't have a new truck in my future and I will stick to my vow to never buy another Ford product.
Like you, I too got rid of my 2003 6.0 2 1/2 years ago. I thought it was the best pulling machine ever made. Until it started the annual cycle of breakdowns on every family vacation. My truck had more maintenance than any vehicle I ever owned and it still left me stranded.
Some of the people on this forum were great and others blamed me (Instead of Ford) because I didn't drive it hard enough!
I traded it in on a GMC 1 ton with a 6.0 gas motor. I have not had one issue. Nothing. Nada. Nope, it does not get there as fast, but it does get there.
I would have traded it in on another Ford, but guess what? No dealer wanted it! Surprise! Their own dealers wouldn't touch their own product.
I, like you will never buy another Ford. Sorry guys. It hurts, but Ford expected us to suck it up and take it.
Not me
I have continued to follow this forum because I had so much time invested in mine and like watching the experienced folks here help others. I am glad that others have been able to make them work.

Did they lowball you 'cause it's a 6.0 or pay what it's worth?
It's always the same argument. Yes, 6.0s break if you haven't spent thousands upgrading them. They also cost thousands less than the nearest competitor. My buddy spent tons more for a Dodge because he "wanted a cummins", it's been in the shop as much as much or more than my Ford.
It's not Fords that are expensive to run and maintain, its the modern turbo diesel engine, any brand, any model, with 300+ horsepower and 600+ torque. You gotta pay to play.
I'm currently stuck driving a BMW because both of my 6.0s are broken and it makes me want to hit a german person. I'll take my 200,000 mile 11 year old single cab XL truck any day over this awful 2011 BMW with 68K.
Just for the interest in it (kind of like a victim of beatings may seeks out another beater mate). I know BMWs pretty well, and they have, across the whole line, a far more intensive maintenance/replacement requirement than the worst truck I've owned (which would be a new Dmax). I would actually own a BMW before I'd own another GM truck...
Please do come back and tell us how the BMW works out -- they are drivers' cars, but that doesn't come without a cost, and sometimes a tow...
All the best of luck to you and it does sound like there is a back story to this major change, not one you need to share... Keep the shiny side up and enjoy your new ride....

I'll take my 6.0 over any Beamer, any day. Good luck and by the way do you service the Beamer or have you priced the cost of service. I can service my 6.0 and have spent less than $1000 on repairs since I purchased it new. It may cost me $10,000 next week but I will still be happy with it.
Not to mention, it will not put the original 6L grin on your face.

Don't mean to rain on your parade, but in my estimation you've jumped from the kettle into the fire with the German thing. At least from where I'm standing.
Speaking from experience (wife's FORMER cars: BMW 325i and Benz CLK430), German cars are engineered to get thru the warranty period and then you can set a timer to them falling apart. Ohhhhh, the oil leaks....
She now has a 2014 FJ Cruiser. Done. And I've vowed to never purchase another German vehicle. That being said, I'll make you great deal on a CLK430 convertible.
As for my '05 F250. Best truck I've ever owned, hands down (and that list includes 4 Toyota 4x4s and a Land Cruiser).
A friend of mine owns an Audi. His latest Audi adventure was when starter crapped out and he was stranded at a 7-11. He had it towed to a shop and it cost 1200 for the starter and install. The tow was on AAA. This is not to mention the costs of regulat maintenance like brakes. That is one reason the resale value is so low on the European cars after the warranty ends. The cost of parts is atronomical, even compared to a 6.0 injector set.
I will stick to the American made cars that I can fix myself with easily obtainable parts.
I won't get into a pissing contest of this vehicle over that vehicle as that's not my intent. I'm happy to see my Ford go bye bye as it became a headache 6 months after buying it starting with a failed turbo, EGR cooler, failed injectors, etc., etc. I have no problem performing routine maintenance on anything, do most of it myself and enjoy doing it. However, I do have a problem with constant issues and lack of manufacturer support although I expect issues from time to time with any vehicle I own. But, when the issues are due to design or manufacturing flaws and there's still no support then that's another story. I have friends and family that own trucks similar to my F350 from the other big manufacturers and combined, they've had less issues than I had. I'm happy to be rid of it and got a good deal on the sale at Carmax. I expect they'll turn around and make money on it and hope that whoever buys it knows what they're getting into. Enjoy your 6.0's!
Had them all, the cheapest to run by a long way was a 98 F150 that I had for 4 years and sold when I got the F250 last year, but you do have to constantly maintain it.
The next cheapest was a BMW E39 M5 that I did 100k miles in 3 years and never wanted to sell, but the divorce sorted that out. It let me down just once - fuel pump, so not expensive. Servicing wasn't that cheap - front pads from BMW cost more than a complete set of discs and pads for the Ford, but it then it did pull 160mph at least once a week in summer. Best run I had was in Bavaria - 50 miles in 20 minutes - I'll never manage that again. What a machine!
Most expensive was a 99 Audi A6 with the 2.5l diesel. I was doing nearly 1k miles per week and it has the cam belt in the worst place - $2-3k to change it at Audi. I swapped it for the F150 when it was due its 3rd belt change.
