Hey everyone, I have a 1973 f250 that I have been building over the past few months. I was preparing it for the motor swap and was getting ready to load it in the trailer, and all of a sudden it stopped rolling and the rear diff locked. It rolled fine over about 30 yards to get down a hill and then before loading, locked. It had previously been sitting in the same place for about 12 years. I was curious if there was a very common occurrence on building these after they've sat, or what I could possibly be looking at as the problem, and what y'all have done with your own problems as such. Never had that problem.
but having built a few of these rear ends, I'd have to say the only reason it'd fully lock up would be something broken or loose that is jammed between the pinion and ring gears.
since you asked what I would do.....
first I'd disconnect the driveshaft to make sure it is really the rear differential, and not the transmission. ie Perhaps the trans popped into park.
if it is indeed the differential, I'd start taking it apart and figuring out what is binding.
