Replace PIP or Replace Distributor?

In running down my no-spark, no-start problem I have tested for the PIP signal by back probing the top-most wire coming out of the TFI. (The #1 wire shown in the picture on this page at easydiagnostics.com.) I don't have an oscilloscope, but my LED tester does not blink. For this reason, I believe my PIP to be bad.

In reading about replacing the PIP, it looks like I need to remove the distributor and take it the automotive shop and see if they can press the old one off and the new one on. On this forum I've seen stated that in older distributors (15 years or so), the bushings are probably shot anyway so replacing the whole distributor is what needs to be done. (120k on the truck (I think.))

A little guidance is requested, thank you.

It is certainly easiest to merely replace the distributor assembly as a unit, but the bushings excuse you're giving IMO is just an excuse given by some to make themselves feel better for spending money like that.

If you can afford it, by all means get a new one. I am cheap myself though.

OK. I'll make sure we have a shop that can press that off and on and I'll order a new sensor. I'd rather save the money and be cheap too because the more I save, the more I have left for other truck parts.

Thanks, men! Your help is much appreciated!

The distributor gear pressed off with a cheapo Harbor Freight 3 prong puller -- no problems getting it off. We'll see about getting it back on The new sensor should be here today.

When you took it off I hope you made a mark so you know how to put it back on. The hole is drilled off center of the shaft and you have to put it back the same way or the pin won't line up! I replaced my pip 2 years ago and found out the hard way! DUH!

^ I did not and as soon as I had it off the shaft I got that sinking feeling in my gut...

The shaft has an oblong hole on just one side just as the gear has an oblong hole on one side. I don't which pairs with which, but if it's off center, then hopefully I'll be able to see it. Headed out to do it now...

^ Yup, that worked -- the third time. Those little holes are heck to get lined up. Thanks.

Yeah they do that so you can't put it on backwards. They call it idiot proofing. LOL! Don't feel bad! I did it too and I made 6 mark on that dizzy when I replaced mine. I thought it would throw it off 180 but being curious I counted the teeth and measured with my mics to see what it would do.

IF! Which is impossible! you could get the pin back through it throws it off by one tooth. Just an FYI for ya there.

One tooth would be enough to ruin a fellow's day. Good info.
