Tire Mis-match ?

Put a set of 33's BF Goodrich ATKO on the beast and planning on doing a long road trip with some fairly heavy weight. The spare doesn't exactly fit anymore (orig. spare). Looking at different options trying to avoid the high cost of buying another full size tire and finding a place to put it. (Won't fit under the bed)

I found a tire that is within 4% that will work (235/85). If I run into an issue of a blown tire does it matter where the slightly off tire should go ? Thinking maybe on the front with the hub disconnected however would prefer to run the skinny tire on the back axle. With the 4% offset on the rear axle cause an issue ?

Trying to avoid getting in a pinch and than running a replacement spare that might cause some further damage. Every vehicle is different so thought I would throw it out there to the experts.

Having done that myself, If on the rear you can lower psi on the taller tire to get tire centerline closer to matching on both. That brings a whole other list of concerns, but we are talking in a pinch.

I didn't mention trailer tire but yah that was what I was thinking and yah just would be in a pinch to make it to the closest service station.

Thanks for the feedback and hopefully I don't have to use it. Feel better knowing it won't cause any damage to the drive train.

I was thinking about a limited slip diff, if he has one it will wear on the clutch pack. 4x4 or not.

OP - glad we could help. If you get in that situation most important to adjust your speed to what it can handle. A bad tire goes a long way at slow speed.

Would 4% be within the normal variability of tires anyway? I mean, even an identical spare would likely be "bigger" than the tire after 40k miles. At what % would limited slip even kick in..

I had to do the math after you said that. lol 4% would be 1.32 inches on a 33.

I wonder if the OP confused 4% with 4/32, which is the max difference for an AWD car like my wifes Ford Edge??
