MSD Education...

Long story short. I don't know a single thing about wiring, except for that the project I just purchased has been half *** gutted. Wires every where, dash gone, all the old stuff is zip tied together...It's a mess to say the least.

That being said, I want to completely remove all the factory wiring, if possible. To do this, I need a full MSD ign correct? It's an 81 bronco with a 85 351W in it I believe. It's got some work done, supposed to have a cam, 10:1, .30 over, so on..

As I stated earlier, I don't know anything about wiring & I can get help with that when it comes install time if needed, but what do I need to buy? I'd rather get the right info from the start instead of read for 2 weeks & hope to buy the right parts. Money is valuable in these times.

I'd like to ditch all the factory mess, and put in a push button start. If anyone can give some links to the right parts to get the job don & explain how MSD works, that would much appreciated.

Sorry for the long first post.

Welcome to FTE! I like your username you are going to need to keep some of the factory wiring to have lights and accessories. I think your best bet would be to contact MSD if someone else on here can't explain it for you. I have MSD, but didn't install it, it looks fairly simple though.

Before you remove any factory wiring, get the MSD box you want to use and follow the

directions that comes with it. MSD has very good instructions and you need to follow

them for a sucessful instalation. I did this some years ago on my 1981 F100 that

has a 351W about like yours and installed a MSD 6A box with a MSD pigtail wire

to plug it directly into the Duraspark distributor. That had to be purchased by

extra. It was easy to do and it runs perfectly.

Just because you want to eliminate the factory wiring, that does not mean you need a MSD unit. Here's a diagram on how to wire the factory duraspark II ignition system.

If you want a simpler system, you could run a older points style distributor and convert it to a pertronix electronic ignition.

Or even more simpler... Get an HEI style distributor. It's just one wire.. Two if you run a tach..

It's just an off-road project truck. It has no lights, accessories, so on. I've already dove tailed both ends, SAS it, built my own RA, so on. It's just the wiring that has me buzzed.

I'll follow up on all of your suggestions you've all posted, & bump the thread if/as needed.

Much appreciated.

I agree with Dave, I see no reason to buy all kinds of MSD stuff. MSD does make some great stuff and some I always suggest, their cap for example. But for an off road rig I see little benefit in spending the money on things like an MSD spark box. You say money matters, then why spend any more then you have to.

Been a while since I priced it but it would be what $500-$600 for a distributor, box, and coil? While I assume you already have most of the DSII stuff?
