I tried to use my 4x4 today and the front wheels would not engage using the ESOF. The light comes on in the dash saying its in 4x4. i do not believe i have a vacuum leak because it doesn't switch over to the automatic setting for defrost. what else could it possibly be I'm stumped at this point.
Im hoping to see some replies on here because I'm experiencing the exact same symptoms with my 2011 F350 SRW XLT. We have some snow on the ground here today and I put my truck in 4 hi to when I pulled into my driveway. The roads were cleared pretty well so I didn't need it until I got to my driveway where trees cast shadows that prevent the snow from melting. Anyway, the light came on that said my 4 hi was engaged and I started driving up my driveway. I came to a steep incline and I started up but I started spinning and lost traction. I stopped and tried to start again but with no luck. I looked down and the information center said check 4x4 and there is a picture of a wrench. I too checked the heater vents when turning 4x4 on off and it did not default to defrost so i don't know where to start. I can't tell if the 4x4 was ever engaged all, just that the light said it was until I lost traction.

Also, it could be just that the automatic hubs are worn out. They are automatic...right? If not, you need to lock them by hand. My 2007's auto-locking hubs wouldn't lock very well even if turned manually to the lock position.
Get a mighty vac and go to town checking everything.
I found my vac solenoid was cracked on mine. Heater didn't switch to defrost when shifting to 4 high but the hubs wouldn't lock. Found no leaks going to thy hubs. Ended up being the vac solenoid leaking at times.
