The truck is a 98 with the v6.
I had no heat so i went to install the thermostat. Not only do i think po installed it backwards, but i think i might have been installed wrong.
What is the correct order?
I feel its housing, thermostat, fel-pro gasket, then block is this correct?
Also the thermostat i have has a rubber gasket that goes around the thermostat, i can discard this right? Lastly, do i really need any kind of sealant?
Housing, thermostat with a bit or form a gasket around it to help seal it to the housing, then felpro gasket, then bolted it up to the block. Its not leaking and appears to working just fine.
Now i got to figure out why theres no heat, either blend door, switch or, heater core. Leaning towards blend door.
look at the gauge on dash. Is it mid range ? Feel the top radiator hose... hot ? Feel both heater hoses.. one should be somewhat hotter than the return.. Quick test on old heater core is to remove the two hoses from MOTOR end and connect one to the garden hose. Blow thru the hose, thru the heater, and out the other hose into a bucket... reverse flow after 5 minutes.......... see if there is a valve on the motor end of one hose that is vacuum operated and "stuck closed".
Yeah bud, what steve said. The heater system is very very simple and the thermostat has nothing to do with it. When you have no heat the problem is one of the following.
1. No air is moving through the heater core
--a. Blower not running or blocked
--b. Blend door is shut in the 'cold' position
2. No coolant is flowing thru the heater core
--a. No coolant is being pumped out of the engine
----i. coolant passageways are blocked
----ii. water pump is not functioning
--b. There is a blockage in the heater lines or in the core itself
So to fix this you test each possibility starting with the easiest.
The truck wasn't warming up fully. I believe the PO installed it backwards. Now it runs near mid-range. Just slightly below mid-range, but just fine.
As for the the heater hose "hot" feels more like warm to me. The heater core hoses feel the like they are the same "warm". Although i was checking it out side where is was 10`F so maybe thats why hot feels warm? idk.
Also there must of been straight water in the system cause it was frozen. I parked it indoors and allowed it to thaw out and flushed it with hot water and blew the water out with compressed air. This is how i do my coolant flushes, it works usually. Then mixed 50/50 coolant.
I can see the servo move for the blend door, but i cant get my camera into the duct to see the blend door actually move.
Ill also have to check for this valve, but i dont recall seeing one before.
some V6 had a shut off valve in the heater line. Also if truck has been run with no antifreeze ....... I remember a post of a corroded water pump impeller that caused low flow.
