I'm changing my water pump on my 79 f250 with 351m. Everything was going good until 1 bolt broke off. Pump came off but I have a 1/2 inch of the bolt sticking out the block... I'll get it out today. Hopefully a nut welded will do. But since I'm there by the timing chain. Is it a good idea to put a new one on. With out the retarted timing? Everything else would be stock. It would be nice if I got a little more power. The 351m got dogish when I added 6 inch lift with 35's. What yall think?
Yes what I have read is one from a 71 will work to straight up time it.
"Changing the timing chain makes a world of difference on the 351M. The stock chains are retarded 5 degree, and just get worse as they stretch. Get a 71' chain with no timing retard and they are completely different motor."
The 351 guru T Meyer might give advice over the phone and should have the absolute correct answer on that year.
I am sorry that all I have was a yes to the idea of the swap and some links with #'s. If it works out for you, please let US know on here. Yes not much help but I hope I got the ball rolling in the right direction?
