T98 for sale on ebay
Will that T98 bolt onto my 49 F5 8RT flathead instead of the T9 4 spd non syncro I currently have? If not will a hogshead bell housing make it fit? If the bellhousing helps, do I need anything else?
The T98 in this thread will not work in a '48-'52 truck. The input shaft has the right size splines, but is too long. the front of the case is not drilled for the halfbell/hogshead. The hogs head from a T9 will not fit a T98 without boring the bearing retainer hole about an 1/8" larger. There is also no rear transmission mount on this T98.

Man do I appreciate that info. We are getting ready to pull the front clip, hood and body to start to prep for paint. I was hoping that the trans swap was going to be easier. We have three T98's on the shelf at our local junk yard. I am not sure what to look at so one of them will fit?
Must be nice to be able to go to your local junk yard and buy parts off the shelf. Nothing like that up here. Just two pick-n-pull and they never get any 50's ford trucks. One other yard that is starting to keep some vintage stuff from the crusher. All the other yards only stock new modern vehicles.
Mark, how hard would it be to make a 53-55 T98 work in a 48-52 application? Can the later case be drilled to match the early mounting holes? Can a new rear bearing / motor mount be fabricated reasonably easily? Shortening the input shaft isn't too hard on a lathe, and boring out the pilot hole on the bell housing is do-able too.
jmadsen, The PTO should be the same for '48-'55 T98 transmission. In '56 and later the direction of the helix on all the gears changed, so the later PTO won't work on a '55 and earlier transmission.

Fred, The case would be the simple part. The threaded holes for the hogshead are thru holes, so once the T9 hogshead was bored to fit the T98 bearing retainer, you could drill and tap thru the hogshead. I don't know if there would be enough splines left after shortening the input shaft. I think there is about an 1" difference in length. The mounting foot for the rear bearing retainer could be fabricated from steel and welded to the existing cast iron bearing retainer. The biggest problem is the input shaft, the rest would be fairly easy to overcome. Joblot has some parts for these transmissions. If they have the earlier input shaft the rest of the mods would be do able.

Bravo Delta, I will take some photos of my T98 for you and post them here. Basically, the T98 you are looking for will look a lot like your T9. It will have a halfbell/hogshead on it and the rear mounting foot will be turned forward toward the engine instead of facing rearward like the T9. You will also need one with the parking brake for your truck. Make sure you get the parking brake handle and all the linkage to the brake. The handle is the same as the T9, but the linkage attached to it to operate the brake is longer.

Bravo Delta, I posted the transmission photos in a new thread titled, T9 and T98 Comparison Photos, so they would be easier for everyone to find. Several like yourself have asked the differences between the T9 and T98.
