Rough runnings

Let me start by telling you what I've done already. My girlfriend just bought her first vehicle, '89 full size Bronco Eddie Bauer. 302, auto, 4x4. The previous owner had had a overheating problem and changed the thermostat. He felt the need to pull the distributor to do so. I had to take over where he failed to get it running. Following the Haynes book, I got it timed right and set running great at 10* btc. It sat for 3 days and now when we start it, it will run for 1-2 seconds then die. starts right back up every time, runs for 1-2 seconds and dies again. Hold the gas pedal down just enough to keep it running the RPMs range from about 2000 to just barely running. I'm not sure where to start. Any help is greatly appreciated. The faster I get the Bronco running the happier the girlfriend will be.

What firing order do you have the plug wires routed for?
Is there any evidence of coolant fouling any of the spark plugs? Overheating is rarely caused by a thermostat but a stuck open stat is usually one of the first obvious results of overheating, it's much more likely the engine has a blown head gasket which isn't really a hugh deal if caught and repaired quickly.

I have not pulled the plugs yet. I made sure the plug wires were ran according to what the Haynes book has listed for the '93 and earlier 302. 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. It seemed to run great for a couple of hours after I fixed the botched thermostat replacement and set the timing. Test drove it a few blocks after it reached operating temp. Had good throttle response, seemed like it had plenty of power. Then after sitting for 3 days this new problem.

First off pull some codes, and if you don't have a simple OBD-I Ford code reader, get one because it's very handy and will pay for itself a lot of times.

In the mean time I'd check fuel pressure first, and I know it sounds stupid.. but make sure there's gas in the tank.. like if your gauge ain't working and you can't tell.

But anyways it will be a lot easier if you can run a KOEO test first with a code reader.
