Transmission swap

I want to get rid of my automatic and make it stick. Has anyone done this before or have any idea on how much it would cost?

This is for your '76 F100, correct? And you have an FE motor, or all your posts wouldn't be the FE forum I reckon.

What type of trans do you want? Truck 4 speed with low gear? Performance 4 speed? Truck 5 speed with OD? Performance 5 speed with OD?

Old 3 speed?

Old 4 speed OD?

You will need a bell housing for your motor, a flywheel, clutch, and a pedal set for your year truck along with the clutch linkage. You may need a different cross member and drive shaft as well.

Cost? IF you can find all that stuff from a donor truck I would guess you will be into it about $500 on the low end by the time you buy the new clutch and throw out bearing and other parts that you must buy new.

Labor? Figure 12 hours, plus parts search time.

WAG alert....ymmv

I'd love to have a 3 on the tree but it really confuses me how It actually works on the column. But on the other hand a 4 on the floor would mean I have to hack into the beautiful american made steel floor. This would also be all done in my garage without a proper lift or hoist or any special tools

Given the lack of tools etc, just enjoy your automatic. You have a working vehicle, worth much more than half worked hulk.....

I pulled and reinstalled a 435NP with a floor-jack on my '74 highboy, what's this about "proper tools"?

It's not hard to go from auto to 435NP - which is really a 3-speed on the floor with an extra-low extra forward gear

Also, have you made certain your floor doesn't already have the removable piece for the floor-shifter?

Besides tools it sounds like he also needs a mentor for the job. Hidden items such as pilot bearings and clutch rods can turn something simple into a nightmare if not done properly.
