If I was to start playing with the 5.0 in my truck what would I have to do with my EFI computer? chip changes and etc? I like carbs for ease of tune and don't know squat about EFI. I am not going to start trying to build some HP in my truck if the computer and EFI crap is going to be a pain in the ***. If it is, it will go the way of the dodo bird and a new carb/intake will take its place.
Nothing, as long as you do not change anything radically.
You can port and polish your heads, 2.5in dual exhaust, headers,
a mild cam that is designed for Speed Density engines. You can advance the timing a few degrees, (stock is 10 BTDC, you can go as high as 14BTDC, but you will be running 93 octane all the time).
You can also install a adjustable fuel pressure regualtor and tune the pressure to lean the engine out a little bit. I think most try to set it at 40 or 41 psi, stock is suppose to be 42-45 I think.
You CANNOT do any of the following with out a new chip or MAF injection: wild cam, change the valve geometry (1.6:1 to 1.7:1 rockers) pistons, rods, add a blower or turbo, or stroke the engine. You also cannot change the fuel delivery system except for using the Edelbrock truck intake for speed density.
Try these suggestions, some of them will work better than others.
