my friend has a 94 F150 with off road package. he has lots of play in the pinion bearing...i guess that's what its called it's appears tobe an 8.8 rear end all u-joints are tight but grabbing on the rear end of the driveshaft it wobbles alot 1/8" or more in the housing...how easy hard is it to fix....what parts do we need?
Help??
Open the cover and drain the fluid. Take a good look at everything. Mine had more than bad bearings. The gears were bad. The fluid looked milky. I think it had been submerged a few times and not serviced in well over 100,000 miles. Expensive.
What gearing do you have? I have a 10.25 full floating axle that you can have if you come and get it. It has 4.10 gears, Works great no leaks. Good time to upgrade
Actually some rear ends will have a white looking oil from the factory, sometimes when they are run in the titanium dioxide that is used to run the pattern is used in excess and turns the oil white. If the pinion has been loose for a while it should have the bearings replaced and a new crush sleeve installed. Open it up and check it out before condemning it.
Back in the 50's they used to fill rear ends with sawdust. Kind of a bandaid fix if you want to get rid of it! I dont think I could sleep at night if I did that. I have known people that did it.
Check pinion nut, you should pull the back cover and check for metal fragments in the oil, if that is all fine just go to your Ford dealer and buy a small bottle of friction modifier. I think it is in a 4oz. bottle. When I changed the fluids in my diffs they were very loud all of a sudden. I heard about the friction modifier, bought a couple bottles and added it to both diffs. The noise was gone within a few miles.
well i need to fix it.....not sure where to start. not much money so i'll have to try to do it myself....just no idea where to start and which brand of parts to use....where can i find a good diagram of what i'm getting myself into??
this truck has 155000 miles on it....i need to coax another 10 months...then i'd like to switch to a cleveland if i can find one
i'm assuming that with a cleveland i'll hae to change tranny and then the axles...i have some basic knowledge...with help from a friend we just custom built a 9" lift for a 1999 ranger 4x4 looks great and handles great also...so i have some basic knowledge... just that the rearend is getting into uncharted waters for me.. so any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
If there is a U pull it junk yard in your area you could get yourself up and running by going and getting the stuff there. If you are not comfortable installing the gears you could get the entire rear end and just swap rear ends. There is a little more work involved but if you know how to take off the driveline, springs, shocks, brakes and stuff you could just swap the entire rearend. It would be way easier to just find someone who could get the gears in correctly. They are simple to take apart and put together. Getting the gears to mesh together right is technical part.
