snorkel kit on a v10 excursion

So I have been in the process of deciding on a cold air intake and then my buddy got me all excited about building a snorkel kit. I know a lot of people say their is no reason for the cold air intake anyway but I would like some opinions anyway. I have heard that the snorkels actually restrict airflow more than the cold air does.

If your looking for sound then the cai will do it for you. The stock intake tract is capable of flowing more cfm than the throttle body can suck at redline. The snorkel is a great idea if your actually looking at fording, other than that and looks it's pretty useless. Water that deep is going to cook the electronics. I could see the turns it would have to make not playing nicely with the flow. Again, it'll still probably flow more than the engine can take. In the end, it's your rig.

Unless you have plans on going in the water it's a stupid idea.

I'm sure all the "kids" up the street will think it's cool though. This is the second thread you have made about snorkels so far and you have yet to say why/how/if/when you would ever need one, just that you want one. Without a need it's stupid. Think of it like rollin coal, looks "Friggin Sweet" but it's just retarded as hell.

This response is out of line, for many reasons. You calling him out over needs vs wants is uncalled for...among other things. Granted he asked for opinions, but lighten up man.

You can take probably the same snorkelkit as the 7.3 Diesels have, Safari Snorkels for example, because our V10 has the same opening in the driverside fender. Its the oval hole.....

But to use this properly you need to fabricate an custom inlet from this hole to the throttle body AND you have to relocate several parts in the engine bay

A lot of work just for a cool appearence if you dont want to cross rivers .........
or want to play with the Icelandguys

snorkel kit on a v10 excursion

Thanks for all the replies. First off I am definitely not trying to look cool. I my opinion I really don't like how the snorkels look, I think they look horrible on most vehicles, but that's just me so I don't mean to offen anybody who has one on their excursion. Secondly my main concern was airflow. I have a guy here at a 4x4 whop telling my it increases airflow exponentially over a cold air intake which I find hard to believe and my mechanic buddy telling me it actually restricts over the factory intake. When it comes down to it I actually do have use for it though. I live in an island beach community that floods pretty quickly when hurricanes approach and when evacuating I have had times when I have been up to my tires ( which are 38") in flood water just getting to the bridge to get out of there. But have always made it no issue. But my main concern really is airflow and gas mileage. I am getting about 10mpg right now and I am trying to tweek everything I can to change that. I did the exhaust and the tuner will be after the intake and possibly changing the gearing a bit. If you guys have any more Ideas out there I would love to hear them. THanks

Seems like it will limit visibility out the left front?

Ok....try to look it from this side. The Snorkel from Safari for example was made to serve
a 7.3 Liter or a 440cui Engine properly. So it will serve a 6.8 / 414cui very well.
Your concerns should rotate around the electric, your fan shroud and your exhaust tip.
You should eleminate the shroud and swap to an electric system wich can be manuel
deactivated in case of a Riverforging.
What helps a snorkel in 7ft height when your exhauts is in about 2ft. Nothing. You just need to idle for 2seconds than its done.

Hmm, forgot about the tail end Mike! I assumed exhaust gasses would keep water out...

Good eye on the right hand drive!

Where is the Aussie's exhaust then? One presumes they ford with it.

Yes and no. More yes than no but there is so much that has been said on the fact already that the post is redundant. Better gas mileage? Hell no. The OEM intake is MORE that enough. If the COPS go under water the truck is done end of story, snorkel or not. until the other issues are addressed the snorkel is the least of the worries.

Thats what I said.....Electrics (BlackBox, Cops, etc.)
Belong to the exhaust.....as long as you stay on the right paddle and the system is without leaks it would be fine....but going on the brake is
mostly equal engine stops. its like a Potato in the tip. Remember at the First Humvees....they had not only the extended Snorkel...they had a sky high tail pipe on the driver side, too.....nearly the same displacement by the way.....

I know, I wasn't trying to say anything new but this was brought up in his other thread about snorkels as well and he seemed to ignore it there too so I thought if I posted it here in addition to yours he might see it

Seriously Apoc, let it go. Your remark was horse crap. Snarky to the point something needed to be said.

Discuss all you want the merits & benefits to the OP, as others are, but wants vs needs? Retarded? Stupid as hell? Worst idea ever? Cant imagine your response if someone said those things to you.
