Howdy guys-
While in 4x mode today the front hub(s) was chirping. I disengaged 4x and it kept making the sound. I re-engaged/ dis-engaged, etc. trying to find when it started/ stopped. It finally did stop after about 4 minutes at 35 mph. It just got louder and louder. I didn't want to go any faster. Is there a problem with my vacuum system to the hub? It just doesn't seem to be a wheel bearing type of noise but I certainly am no expert. I have never heard it while in 2x-- Thanks for the input!
I had the same thing happen two years ago, turned out the bearings were shot. Luckily it was still under warranty. I now keep a policy of running the hubs in lock 500 miles, then in free the next 500 to keep the front end from freezing up again.
Thanks for the replies! The truck is an '02 with only 23K on it- I can pull the hub but can someone help me to know what to look for with regard to the bearings? I am not sure I would know if they were wasted just by looking at them- Also, if you know of another post or website where there is a 'how-to' for hub inspection/ service?? I know this has been an issue several times before, but I have not been able to find much info- If it was a u-joint would it not be chirping all the time and not just in 4x? I appreciate the help! One last thing, anyone have any suggestions for getting the dealer to service them? It is under warranty but the dealing with the local service department is like pulling teeth--
Take it to a dealer. Let them at least initiate a work order on it in case the hub is bad. This could be a factory defect. And on the chirping - yes it could be the u-joint that only squeaks in 4WD. It could be a front axle joint that only spins when engaged. Go get the problem logged in at any dealer. It would be nice if you had a friend that already had a dealer of choice in your area that he trusts. As far as suggestions on service - that depends on the area - sorry. I am in Northeast Texas where there aren't any you can really trust.
