Question 86 front hubs

I have manual front hubs on my 86, how long after you stop using 4x4 should you disengage them?

Technically, you never have to disengage the hubs if you don't want to. Sometimes, I'll go weeks on end without disengaging the hubs -- depends on how bad the roads are. I disengage the hubs when I'm confident I won't want 4wd on my way to where I'm going.

While the front drivetrain is spinning, parts will wear. Of course, never using the front end will cause wear too. Considering that we're almost certainly talking about something in the middle, I wouldn't worry about it. It will increase wear some, but the wearable components of the differential (not including things like u-joints) will still likely outlast the rest of the drivetrain (like the rear end that has to spin all the time).

Mine stay engaged almost all winter and aside from being a little louder I have not noticed any problems. Your gas milage will not be as good however. Mine is an 86 also and I would be more worried about your transmission than your 4x4 system. Good educational question however, I bet you helped several other people.

No worries, the automatic A4LD is just a weak tranny. If you were to apply to much load too fast you would wipe it out. As long as you don't climb rock hills, or drag race in 4LOW they are fine. I have just read a lot of complaints about them, and was using that as a reference to the fact the 4x4 system is not the weakest link. Sorry about the confusion.

2000lb tow

To "broncofrk" I would advise not to pull a 2000 lb anything with your BII,,,,,Those tranny's do enough work just pulling their
own vehicles weight .
The only way I'd pull a ton of boat back and forth to a lake from my house ,would be if it were down hill in both directions.

I am just going to second the opinion of NO! Nothing on a B2 would do a good job of pulling a 2000 lb boat. Maybe a jet-ski, but not your boat. Keep it safe.
