Will this 3G Alternator work?

I'm wanting to get a good 3G alternator and was wondering if this is what I should be looking for?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/FORD-MUSTANG-1-ONE-WIRE-3G-ALTERNATOR-66-86-87-88-89-90-92-93-94-95-96-HIGH-AMP-/361209458508?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5419c2ef4c&vxp=mtr
Will this allow me to remove the existing regulator mounted to the side of the engine bay also?

I'm not generally a fan of one wire regulators.
The tremendous advantage of 3G alternators is their idle output, and without exciter current you can forget that.
I'm not sure how a charge indicator, or battery light would work with one of those either.
You will need to lose your ammeter, or convert it to a voltmeter.
Gary Lewis had his done by Rocketman. That guy is popular on the Cougar forums.

They show grinding the mounting bracket, so it must be a 148mm 130A case on a 7" C-C mount.
Their Ebay listing doesn't render well on my device.

Yeah, you'll do away with everything.
You only need a 4Ga. fused charge cable going to the 'hot' side of your fender mounted solenoid.

Hey Jim. Thanks for the info. I really don't want to lose my ammeter or battery light just yet. I can deal with an external regulator, but not really sure what to get or where to get it from. I'm wanting to upgrade from my current alternator (1G I'm guessing) to a 3G 130 - 150 amp or so but know there's a lot more involved as far as having the wiring harness, etc..

Can you point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

You will have to ditch the ammeter or find a shunt that can handle the 160A a maxed out 3G can produce.
At that point, charging current is such a small percentage of full scale as to render it useless anyhow.
Ask Gary what a beautiful job was done on his, and how well calibrated it is.

You need to grind your existing bracket to clear the 148mm diameter case of the 3G as pictured in the listing you shared.

A 3g conversion harness is available on Ebay for around $15 delivered.
I think Matthew (FordFETruck) used one of these recently with his new DB Electrical 3G alternator.
Perhaps you should ask him how he likes his conversion.

Thanks Jim. I think I'll do quite a bit more research before I delve into the 3G conversion. I've got enough things I'm doing to my truck now to keep me busy..
