Transfer case for 76 highboy

Have a question about my transfer case in my 76 highboy. It's a new process 203. I have read on some previous threads about transfer cases and they asked if their going to paint it red. I thought to myself why would you do that. I bought my highboy brand new in 76 and never remember it being red. I'm cleaning my transfer case today to get it ready to change some seals and gaskets and while I'm grinding through the rust and grease I'm finding hints of red paint. Does anyone know did these come from the factory painted red? Would appreciate some advice. Thanks in advance

Good question. I cleaned mine up and painted it silver with engine enamel. Didn't find any sign of red paint on mine.

Ive owned 4 HB, 2 were 76's and 2 were 77's, none had a red TC, 3 were np205's and 1 np203. Hichory1991 looks good like that.

The one I just pulled out of a 75 Highboy has redish paint under all of the grease. Dont know if its factory but i'm prety sure it has never been pulled out of the truck until I did.
