Transfer case question
What were the early transfer cases that were coupled with driveshafts called like on the '77 I was looking at?

The divorced transfer cases were DIY fare. They weren't factory. Would you be looking for the numbers NP205? NP = New Proccess. These transfer cases were aften set up(by their owners) as divorced units. That means 2 gear shifts. One for range selection and another one for 2-4 wheel selection.
They're getting harder to find, so grab it if that's what it is. There's also the NP203. Not quite as famous.
Hope that helps.

59-77 F-250's used a factory divorced transfercase. The F-100 were mostly married.

But then nearly 50% of married cases, drowned the life out of itself and then divorced.

Married is better for shorter wheelbases where as divorced is good since it uses a regular 2wd transmission.

What about strength factor Nathan? It seems to me like with a divorced one, you would have an extra "driveshaft" to worry about?

I've never heard of anyone breaking one of those driveshafts. Forklifts also use a small driveshaft like that and they have no problems.

My mistake Loredo. Same term, different units. I was thinking of the double stick units that definitely ARE DIY set ups. But I missed the connected by driveshaft thing. My bad.
