I have an 04 exped with the 5.4L. The service engine soon light came on and when I ran the code, it was P0442 "EVAP small leak detected". Autozone said it could be the fuel cap, EVAP canister/hose cracked, defective purge or vent solenoid, or a vacuum leak at the engine. I replaced the gas cap, the light came back on. I have also noticed its been smoking a little out of the tailpipe when I first start it up. Then the other day the gas gauge stopped working, I topped it off and it started working again.
Could these things be related? Reading through other threads, I was thinking of taking it in to a shop to have a smoke test done to find where the leak is in the EVAP system- is this the best option? I am not sure how to diagnose this problem. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated
