Hey guys any ideas how to get my water pump housing to stop leaking. Its on my 1954 239v8 and its leaking at the bottom under where bypass hose connects. I know its nor the hose but between the housing and intake. I have removed 3 times and it leaks at the same spot every time. The housing doesn't appear wrapped and iam putting a small amount of Loctite brown sealant on both sides of gasket. Do you think I need to use 2 gaskets or is there a better sealant I need to use. Also I am letting it set overnight before I put anti freeze back in to be sure it cures. Thanks
Hey Saauven,
Sorry to hear about your challenge. Our experience with the last water pump we changed was similar to your's in that it leaked like hell & we thought we had obviously botched up the job. We did it twice - unfun for sure! We then just ran the thing to see what would happen when it all warmed up - the gasket swelled up after 10 minutes or so & it never leaked after.
Have you tried running it for a while - adding some more water as needed giving the gasket a chance?
I use the Permatex Water Pump/Thermostat RTV Silicone. It designed just for water pumps and seems to seal up better than other general purpose sealants.
