Hub assembly course vs fine thread

So it is time for hub assemblies on my truck. Can someone please tell me what is so much more special about the fine threaded hubs vs the course thread ones?

I checked the prices today and I could not believe that the fine thread hubs were 160 some odd dollars more than the course ones, Very strange if you ask me.

So is the only REAL diffrence in the studs? Can one save a wad of cash if they buy the course thread hubs and also buy the 16 lug nuts to hold the wheel on? I studied the two hubs today at orielly and I cant tell them apart aside from the studs.

Any input ? TIA

Might wanna price those lug nuts first. IIRC they are about $8 or $9 ea. I had an extra set awhile back and shipped them to a brother in need and he was happy to pay the $50ish shipping to Canada. His local dealer wanted $15 ea for them.

I dont know. I was looking at the dorman nuts. They were 1.89 and if I was to buy the 16 she was going to sell them for 1.50. Are the dorman nuts that bad of junk?

Not sure about the nuts. Can't see why they wouldn't work. I have heard you can remove studs and replace but I hate to beat on brand new bearing assy.

The only reason I can think of for the price difference is one assembly is from China and the other USA. The only difference is the stud that is pressed in. If you are uncomfortable beating the studs out, a machine shop can press them out prolly for around $20. You can then turn the nut over and use it to draw the new stud in.

I'd do the USA hub if available, but if not then cheapest with Dorman lug nuts to match. Chinese quality is better than the rep nowadays. I've beat plenty of studs out of brake drums, but I would not beat on a new hub for any reason. Get the ABS hubs and use the grease zerk from RiffRaff if you don't have ABS.

You can use your existing studs with no beating needed..
they tap in very easily..
I didn't wanna hit on my new timken assemblies last summer either..
I was as gentle as possible and they have racked up the miles since..

BTW - while replacing both since my truck had 170,000 miles.. 1 side was full of metal shavings.. Caught her just in the nick before my 26 hour drive moose hunt
