Crate 460ci recommendations

Hello,

I have a 1985 F-250HD 4x4. The engine is a 460ci Carb.

My wife and I plan on pulling a trailer with this truck when I retire in a few years. I would like to replace the engine with a new Crate 460ci with a suitable build for trailer pulling.

Can I get a couple of recommendations of possible sources to purchase such an engine?

Thanks

My suggestion would be stay away from parts store engines like the ones from advance auto or auto zone. They have horrible quality standards. I have seen engines that the bores were uneven on. The bores might be standard, the next .30 over, then standard, then. 60 over. They just fix the bare minimum to get it out the door. We just replaced the third advance auto motor in a 2006 Cadillac ct-s and the longest one has lasted is 6 months. crappy warranty and wouldn't give the guy his money back to buy a better quality engine. Also to have the warranty most crate engines have to be installed by an ASE mechanic

By crate if you mean "new" I am not seeing much of anything available. And even the ones that are rebuilt seem to be "fire breathers" that I would not want to pull a trailer.

If I were you and could have the truck down for awhile, I would research someone locally to rebuild your engine.

Hi Dave,

I just had the engine rebuilt. To make a long story short, it began spewing oil immediately. Took it back to the mechanic and he said he left an adapter on the oil pressure sender port on the engine and that that was where it was leaking and he fixed it. Took it out again and it was still spewing oil. Took it to another mechanic and found that the main rear seal was leaking and that both valve covers were leaking also. Mechanic did some quick checks and found that a torque wrench was obviously not use. Now I have doubts about the whole rebuild and I want to be secure in knowing I have a reliable engine before setting out. This is a smallish town and most of the mechanics are advanced shade tree type. After thinking about it I'm probably better off getting one that I know is remanufactured well (and has a guarantee) and pulling parts of my current engine to complete it. Huge waste of money and time at a garage I thought knew what they were doing

Some people like Jasper. They do seem to honor their warranty, I guess everyone has a failure once in awhile but they seem to be good at replacing it.

This past weekend, I drove past a local mechanic shop and saw the Jasper sign proudly displayed. It said, "Nationwide coverage with 3 years and 100,000 mile guarantee".

I have used several Jasper's over the years Installing
them In customers rigs. I got them through Napa back then.
Out of maybe 150 engines I got one bad 300 I6. They replaced
it asap and refused the core. I was happy with my dealings
with them.

I'm sure if you spoke to one of the performance builders they could put you together a good truck engine, price will be higher than a reman, but quality should be better.
CarsByCarl.com has a very good reputation in the 460 community off the top of my head.

There's a Florida guy in the '87-'96 forum who just bought an engine from Scott at Reincarnation High Performance in Washington State.
He is highly regarded as well.
