Time for Headers for the 79

Getting ready to get the front clip and cab back on the the old lady's truck. but before we do she wants to get a set of headers and ditch the cast iron rusty manifolds. They will be going on a 1979 F150 4x4 with a 400 engine auto trans and power steering. Not looking to spend a fortune but I don't want crap either that will cause never ending sealing flange leaks or dent the tubes to fit. Many different header brands out there so would like some feedback on fitment and quality of what you's used. What ones are good and which should I stay away from?

I put a set of Flowtech (32520FLT) ceramic headers on my 79 F350 4x4 a couple of months ago when I was restoring it. They are the full length type. The fit was very tight, I had to loosen the right-side motor mount and jack the motor up a couple of inches. Probably have about 1/4" clearance from the frame rail. I also had to notch about a 1/2" out of my crossmember (left side) to hook the exhaust pipes up to the headers! But they are very nice looking!!

I'd like ceramic coated ones but they cost a bit more just for the coating. Still up in the air on painting them or having them coated so not set on either way. Those are the issues I'd like to stay away from any frame notching, tube denting ect.. Also would like to have a set that works with a stock starter if need be a starter blanket would be installed to keep from heat soak issues.

I have heard good things about Sanderson headers. No gasket needed. I am unsure if a mini starter wold be needed.

What ever brand you use I would recommend fenderwelll exit. Inside the frame ones can cause lots of problems like a caged starter, front d/s clearance issues, running the rest of the exhaust PITA.

The issues is the header exit and the cross member for the trans/xfer case. Some of these pics are F150 some F250, but always the same problem.

If can be done, you just have to have a real good exhaust shop, or do it yourself.
