I have a 2000 7.3 6speed manual and I was thinking about doing a muffler delete until I have the money for a turbo back exhaust. I was just wondering what you guys thought about it? I also wanted to know how loud it is inside and outside and if it makes the turbo whistle sound louder. Thanks.
according to who, officer smith or officer wilson?
officer smith was parked watching traffic in a 25 mph zone and thought your truck sounded just fine, even though it had a deep rumble tone.
officer wilson heard you feeding her the oil up a large hill, while parked up around a stand of trees at the top and thought it sounded far to loud so he hit his blues to "talk" to you about it.
Definitely won't be as loud as a gasser with the muffler removed, the turbo will act as a noise reducer. It will sound more like a truck in my opinion.
Mines a turbo back straight pipe and it's really not that loud. Hardly even gets noticed, but then again I live in the south where vehicle modification is almost mandatory.
In my opinion the muffler is evil and must be banished to the steel yard. My '97 is really loud but it turns out in front of the rear tire.. not to mention the single shots are half of the noise. My '01 has 4" straight turbo back and isn't that loud, the sound travels a distance but the actual volume level doesn't turn many heads.
EDIT: My '97 is also running stock diameter 3.5" so that is part of why it barks louder.
I just put a muffler back in after running straight 4" for about 18-months. There's not a whole lot of turbo noise, more of the V8 diesel sound. The main reason I threw a muffler back on was the drone at highway speeds was just too much, however I have an Excursion so I don't know if the same would apply to a truck since the exhaust exits well behind the cabin. I went from commuting 13 miles to 78 miles all freeway recently so the drone became more apparent and intrusive.
For what it's worth, I threw in an AeroTurbine 4040 (not the XL version) and it stayed every bit as loud as straight pipe however the drone on the freeway is gone now. I don't know what kind of witchcraft they put in the muffler but my EGT's are on average 50-75° lower now and the turbo seems to light faster.
Not the best for hearing the exhaust, but this is it with the 4" turbo back and the AeroTurbine 4040:
