The turbo will muffle a lot. Plus if you are concerned about the neighbors, simply light foot it away from the neighborhood, then nail it. I do that even with the muffler installed.
my truck has 4" stacks that are straight and with the window up u barely hear it in the cab. my buddy has a gutted stock system and it sounds good and isn't that loud
usually if there a reg about a muffler it states that a noise attenuating device is necessary. Many states call a turbo a noise attenuating device. You will have to go thru the regs in your particular area to see if you need a muffler and WHO is saying it is too noisy. Good luck.
I have no turbo with 3" true duals and 5" stacks. They were the loudest pipes you ever heard, garaunteed, until I put 4 mufflers on it. A flowmaster for each side and a short glasspack in each stack. Its still sounds damn good but now I can listen to the radio and talk to people in the cab.
If I had a turbo I would have ripped that muffler off a long time ago. Nothin like a whistling exhuast on a turbo diesel.
i got duel straight pipes that dump right behind my cab, the only time is realy loud is being in the left lane next to the concrete barrier and next to cars. 2 600w amps keeps the noise out. you can forget about talking on the phone, soon i am going to have 5" stacks. in nj i go right through inspection, all the diesel noise and emmissions standards are for trucks 18,000 lbs and up
i used to run twin 4 inch stack with nothing but bends in the pipes for quiet. it was only loud when you stood on it, or let off the throttle at 2500 rpm. then it was louder than my big trucks. now i have 4 inch sidepipe inserts in the stacks, and it is much tamer. cut back the boost from 15 lbs, to 5 lbs, and cut hp from 325 to 250..the down side is that you can no longer hear the turbo, or spin the 36 inch tires with a tromp on the go pedal.
btw, here in new jersey there is a grey area in the motor vehicles laws concerning diesel trucks. between 10,000 lbs and 18,000 lbs registered weight, the vehicle is self inspecting, and as such does not need an inspection sticker or smoke test. my truck is registered for 11,000 lbs, and has ticked off a roadside inspector or 2 when i show them the registration. they hate it when they see a vehicle without an inspection sticker in the window and can not give the owner a ticket.
