Hi, im new to the forums here and have some questions. I have a 2001 ford ranger 2.5 and a standard 5 speed. Its been knocking for a while now and recently its made a much lower tone knock, im thinking I may have thrown a bearing. If someone has had a problem lole thus how did you fix it? Also I am wondering what other engines I can use, besides the 2.5. Thanks
The only way to fix that is replace the bearings and/or do a full rebuild, or install a new/used engine. The only engines that will bolt right in and work is another 2.5 or an older (1997 or older) 2.3. The older 2.3s actually are the exact same engine as the 2.5, just with a shorter stroke. The newer 2.3s (2001+) are entirely different and will not be a bolt-in replacement. They have a different bell housing bolt pattern, among other differences. Any V6 engine will also have a different bellhousing pattern. And the 5 speed transmission you have has a non-removable bellhousing, so swapping to any other engine will also mean swapping to a different transmission.
Well like I said they're basically the same. The 2.5 has slightly more power and torque, and it's what your truck originally had, so I would prefer that. If you want more power for bigger tires, I would re-gear the rear axle and not bother trying to upgrade the engine.
