I have a 2007 Ford Expedition with approx 135k miles with a 5.4. At approx 45 miles per hours it starts shaking and shuttering. It feels almost like you ran over one of those traffic bumps. I've had quite a few issues I've been working so I recently changed all my plugs with motorcraft platinum and all new COPs.
When I am going approx 45 miles per hour it will shutter for about 1-2 seconds with overdrive on. You can almost time it that it will do it every 4 seconds. With overdrive off, you can feel something dragging down the engine and hear a light grinding noise or a mechanical sound but the shuttering is less. I feel there is something definitely cycling approx every 4 seconds.
When i am doing heavy acceleration I feel that it has adequate power and now that I've replace the plugs/cops I don't feel any significant misses etc under hard acceleration (before I changed the plugs/cops I did feel misses).
Not trying to thread jack sir, but I am having this same problem with my 2008 Ford F-150 FX4 SCREW. It is still present even after doing an oil change and tune up. The engine codes being thrown are as follows:
P0300
P0302
P0307
P0316
P1000
It does the same at 40 - 50 mph and again at 60 - 70+ mph with overdrive on.
I have the same exact problem with my 07 F-150 with the 5.4. Mine has 230k on it, and has been doing this for the past 10k miles. I wondered if it could be the torque converter? I'm taking it to have a friend look at it later today, will let you know what they find out.
Ever had your Mass airflow sensor checked? That could do something along those lines with the shaking and shuddering especially if you step on it.
As for the grinding noise that reminds me of a problem with my 4x4 on my 07. The valve that controlled the vacuum lines wasn't holding so it was partially engaging 4x4 at random speeds. Sounds awful and probably not good. It was the valve right behind my battery against the firewall. I'm not sure what it was called. If you trace vacuum lines back it might be something as simple as that. I think it was 30 or 40$ for the part if i recall but haven't touched anything on it since replacing it.
I just bought my 06 F-150 4x4 a month ago and have now learned about all these issues. I saw this video and wondered if anyone else did this with the shaking problem at 1100rpm 45mph.
I had this same issue on my 04 f250 242k (5.4l gasser) . But anyways it shuttered and shaked the same as yall described it... 8 new coil packs and spark plugs plus I cleaned the Mass Air Flow sensor. No problems since then its been almost a year.
