Alright guys, back at it again. So in the winter months i have noticed a coolant leake in my truck. For the long term experienced 6.0 owners, just have a question of where to start? So, i noticed a puddle under it a couple weeks ago. The previous week i noticed my heater didnt work at idle, just blew cold air so i topped off the coolant. Then came the puddles. after a little bit of pokin around, i noticed it was dripping off the passenger side rear of the engine where the block and the head mate and im pretty sure i recall seeing some off the driver side area as well. so of course i immediately fear the worst of a head gasket. Then comes my reasoning. it does white smoke upon initial start up, ONLY IN THE COLD MONTHS. all summer long, not a hint of white smoke. cold comes and its back. smells like oil to me. So with that being said, i dont smell any coolant burning in the exhaust. i dont have any performance issues like loss of power, overheating, black smoke on acceleration, milkshake like oil or coolant, etc. With all of that information, what would your first suggestion be to inspect? BTW this is an 03 f-350 dual rear wheel 6.0 4x4. Any and all input is absolutely appreciated!
Just got done replacing my blue hose under the turbo. EGR cooler hose. Take a flashlight and look in the valley for coolant. I twisted the hose a little bit and started leaking worse. I had the EGR cooler replaced about 1 1/2 years ago and I noticed they used an after market blue hose. I assume that is why it started leaking.
This is how I did mine. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...placement.html
airpilikia, thanks for the reply. I will be sure to give that a gander in the morning when its a little warmer outside. Sounds pretty viable. Thanks again!
Usually when the EGR cooler fails, the coolant leaks internally. The 03 has a pretty robust style EGR cooler, so I doubt that where your external leak is. The blue hose is where I would suspect at this point.
Not saying that the cooler hasn't starter leaking but you can pull the EGR valve and look in the intake for signs of coolant.
I do agree with you and say they are quite robust. I was looking at pictures of an 03 and then 04 and later. Quite a difference. Assuming its the stock cooler it might have bitten the dust. I don't know what kind of maintenance the PO did or didn't do so I won't rule it out completely. I dedicated tomorrow morning for lookin at this. So maybe if I have some 0pictures in question I'll upload for entertainment and education. Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it.
Alright gents, after about 10 minutes of looking, egr cooler orange hose it is. Leaking off the aft hose connection. Any good tips? I assume turbo has to come off for this
Wheeeew idk man. There's a plate under the turbo that completely covers it. Idk how anyone does this without it be in removed. Would meeting its one of the earliest model 03 with a 6.0 change any of that procedure?
In addition to where it's at, they're also proud of it. Seems like theyre something close to $40 from the Ford man. Some folks have gotten a piece of bulk heater hose and a couple of worm clamps to work, and some of the less expensive (cheap) EGR delete kits come with those parts, but in the end you'll be back in there working on it again. It's not as bad as it looks if you follow those directions carefully. Once you get the old one out its a slip fit on the rear tube and twist lock on the front connection. No need for clamps.
The parts stores sell an inexpensive ratcheting bit tool that fits down in there pretty well. Something like this makes the job easier.
Even auto zone And O'Reillys are asking 40 bucks. Outrageous. For a damn rubber hose with a lock joint. Now here is the real question. Its leaking from the back, the slip portion you mentioned. I'm wondering if a stiff clamp would be a good TEMPORARY fix? I'm ramping up for deployment in 2 weeks and I don't have any extra time to try and perform this. Geez!!!
Probably not going to help much. There is a metal ring inside the hose that's not going to compress much. Below is a pic of the back end of one I happened to have on the bench. If it happened to be leaking from where the rubber meets the ring it might help, but usuially its leaking from where the o-ring (inside) meets the metal tube.
Fair enough. Guess I'll be ripping that out when I get back. I read about coolant getting into the egr so I decided to remove the pipe from the intercooler to the intake port( not sure of the technical name) and found oil in it. Removed charge pipe from the turn to cooler, more oil. So I assume that's gonna be an o-ring somewhere in the turbo needing fixed. The list of repairs is getting longer!!!!
Thanks for your service. I had my egr cooler replaced a year and a half ago and they used an aftermarket blue hose. Not much life out of it. I replaced it with a Ford OEM hose. Hopefully it will last about 10 years instead of 1 1/2 years. I just paid 44 bucks for the hose at a Ford dealer. You can probably get it cheaper online.
Part #'s
Blue Hose 4C4Z 8592 AA $44.25
O RING 3C3Z 9N693 EA $6.73
O RING 3C3Z 9N693 FA $6.37
Be sure to cut the hose off and it come out with a little persuasion.
Good luck
Thank you. I appreciate your appreciation. Haha. Yeah, I'm skeptical what's the best route. We'll see. And if the after market product fails I'll Get the money back and move on. Good times.
