have a 2002 Ranger 3.0l 2wd.
Battery light came on, ammeter reading low.
I pulled alternator and replaced worn brushes, charged battery.
Problem remained.
Next I checked alternator wroth test light. Checked fine. But the first time I reconnected the negative battery cable I got huge spark. I thought might be closed circuit.
I put a test light between negative post and cable. When I touch the light, it comes on and the starter solenoid clicks.
The relay is in the fuse box under the hood, so, I removed it. Solenoid clicks when I touch the test light. It continues to do it even though I pulled the starting system fuse. No juice present.
I pulled the starter and the solenoid shows continuity where it should when the plunger is depressed.
take the positive cable and then hook up the ground cable and then run your test. If the test light comes on with everything in a shutdown mode you have a parasitic draw. Start by disconnecting the alternator to see if the light goes out. If it doesn't go out start pulling fuses until it does.
I don't have diagrams for an 02, but many Ford start circuits are wired from ignition switch to fuse to anti theft relay to transmission range sensor to starter relay to starter.
Does anything change when you shift to reverse or drive? If it does the problem is probably a short in the ignition switch.
If no alternator output after reworking it, check the field fuse/fuseable link. if its blown the field coil won't self excite & thus no alternator output.
