Water pump gasket leaking?
After much crawling around and contorting I found the leak. Steady dripping from the bolt above the timing pointer that holds the aluminium ALT/Air pump bracket to the pump/timing cover block. Coming out between the pump and cover from what I can tell...
So, looks like I've got a weekend project I really didn't need.
Any suggestions on a good pump? Cant tell if this one is Motorcraft or not. Looks old though... May as well throw a new pump on even though its not leaking itself. What about gaskets any better than others? I've always used Fel-pro... Don't wanna be doing this again anytime soon...
I got the water pump out easily... Not a single seized bolt like I had expected. (After horror stories of sheared bolts inside timing cover & block I was a bit apprehensive) In fact, the bolts were snug at best which could have contributed to the leak.
The Pump was a Motorcraft, so could be the original, however the truck has a lot of OEM replacement parts on it so the PO obviously took it to the dealership for a lot of its work. (the condition of the truck reflects an owner who cared a lot about it so not surprising.) The short little rubber tube was Motorcraft as well, but was held on with worm drive clamps which makes me think the pump had to be a replacement as Ford originally used the spring type clamps. The gasket was extremely brittle so that was likely a factor as well. The bolts look a little crusty, gonna try cleaning em up but might spring for new ones. All old bolts had threads coated with Orange thread sealant.
Now... Everything came out so smoothly I'm really leaning towards yanking the timing cover and replacing the timing chain. I'll have to pull the rad to get my impact on the crank pulley bolt, but that's no biggie. The seals are leaking oil pretty good anyways so a good time to do it all...
Harmonic Balancer.... Reuse the old, or go new? I've heard of the outer ring spinning on them?
Now I'm just trying to track down a Ford racing oil filter adapter so I can ditch the oil cooler at the same time... Does the dealership stock ford Racing??? If I order online it will take forever and I need it fast
Sheared three bolts off of in my 5.0, took a week and a half with two cans of PB, a torch, vice grips and an impact screwdriver to get them out.
I'm having some trouble finding any Ford Racing remote oil kits that aren't for the Coyote 5.0L, although there are some 90* adaptors for the 460.
See:
Someone else may have better luck.
Is this on your 460? You may have better luck at an Oreillys/NAPA/Autozone.
Here's a list at O'Reillys:

If it's for the 460 in your signature:

From what ive read, as long as the rubber isnt cracked, poking out, or missing on the dampener, you can reuse. Don't quote me on that, as when I did my timing cover I didn't have to take off the dampener to change the gasket.
And yes its on my 460. I can get the ford racing adapter on amazon/ebay but will take too long. I was gonna order it way back when I got the block insert from Ford, but nooooooo, I thought I'd wait... Shoulda bought it then...

If not, the closest thing I can think of is get a couple packs of these:

I cant vouch if the above link will fit on 460 engines, it may be your best shot if the other two links arent like what you already have.
Honestly I went to a stainless steel bolt after the horror of my pump change, YMMV.
Me personally, I just went to the junkyard and found a 351 with a newish looking water pump on it. Pulled the bolts and found they were in great shape so I paid like $6 or something for all of them along with whatever else I needed while I was there.

The ones at Mustangs unlimited are the ones. Thanks!
Fastenal no longer sells to the general public due to our government tax dollars hard at work. Fastenal is an Industrial supplier and our government doesn't want joe blow buying stuff that might hurt him... Not even bolts.... Talk about a Nanny state....
